A dispatch rider was killed in a fatal road accident at the Motorways inward Estate axis of Alapere, Lagos, following a collision with an empty tanker, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has said.

The incident involved a NIPCO tanker with registration number TTN 776ZQ and a dispatch rider identified as an AOC operator. Preliminary findings indicated that the tanker driver, allegedly driving at high speed toward the Estate axis, rammed into the moving rider, leading to his immediate death.

LASTMA officials said their officers responded promptly to the scene, preventing a breakdown of law and order.

A group of aggrieved dispatch riders gathered and attacked the tanker driver in reaction to the incident.

The agency said its personnel acted swiftly to rescue the driver from the mob, maintaining calm and professionalism amid rising tension. Officials subsequently handed the injured driver over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service, who evacuated him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Security reinforcement from the Alausa Police Station later helped restore normalcy and disperse the crowd.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased rider, describing the incident as tragic and avoidable.

He urged tanker drivers and other motorists to obey traffic rules and avoid excessive speed, warning that reckless driving remains a leading cause of road fatalities in Lagos.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the need for vigilance and a renewed commitment to road safety. Every road user has a responsibility to act with caution and protect lives,” he said.
