The outgoing Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, will step down from office on Thursday, bringing to a close his service in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, where he played a key role in shaping and implementing the country’s economic reforms.

In a statement marking the end of his tenure, Edun expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve Nigeria since May 2023.

He noted that his journey in the administration began as head of the Presidential Transition Committee, followed by his role as Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, before he was later appointed Finance Minister.

He explained that the administration came into office at a time of serious economic challenges but has since worked across different levels of government to implement reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and promoting long-term growth.

According to him, “We have worked collectively across government to advance critical reforms that stabilised the macroeconomic environment, strengthened fiscal sustainability, and laid the foundation for inclusive and long-term growth.”

Edun stated that the impact of these measures is already visible, with economic growth rising from about 2 per cent to over 4 per cent, while inflation has declined from 35 per cent to 15 per cent. He attributed these improvements to coordinated policy actions and renewed confidence among investors.

He added that the progress recorded was the result of joint efforts involving members of the Federal Executive Council, state governors, and partners in both the public and private sectors.

“I am proud of what we achieved alongside colleagues in government and our partners, whose work continues to support the nation’s economic transformation,” he said, while noting that more work still lies ahead.

The minister also thanked local and international stakeholders for their cooperation and support during his time in office, describing economic reform as a continuous process.

Expressing confidence in Nigeria’s future, Edun said he remains hopeful about the country’s direction and wished his successor well in continuing efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.

He added that he remains committed to supporting the administration and contributing to national development.
