The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, resigned from office, not sacked, the Presidency has clarified.

Egbetokun, whose tenure was extended by one year in 2025 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, tendered his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing personal family reasons for his decision.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development to journalists when contacted.

“Egbetokun resigned today. He was not sacked. A statement will be issued later in the day to this effect,” Onanuga said.

The outgoing police chief was appointed Inspector-General of Police by President Tinubu and later received a one-year extension to his tenure in 2025.

Further details surrounding his resignation are expected in an official statement from the Presidency.
