The candidate of the Accord Party (AP) for the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, Opeyemi Falegan, has pledged improved welfare for pensioners if elected into office.

Falegan made the pledge in Ado-Ekiti during a visit to leaders and members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ekiti State chapter, where he said retirees deserve better care and recognition for their years of service to the state.

The governorship hopeful said that the visit was aimed at appreciating retirees pensioners for their contributions to the development of the state and to interact with them on issues affecting their welfare.

According to him, retirees should be celebrated and supported while they are alive, noting that their sacrifices during their years in service should not be forgotten after retirement.

Falegan said that his administration, if elected, would prioritise policies and programmes that would improve the living conditions of pensioners and address their welfare concerns.

He assured the retirees that their demands and concerns would be carefully reviewed, describing the issues raised as legitimate welfare matters that deserve attention in a responsive system.

“This visit to pensioners in Ekiti State is very important. They have contributed a lot to the development of the state during their years of service and they deserve to be appreciated and supported.

“I want to celebrate them from the level of transitioning from being workers to the level of retirement. They should be celebrated now that they are alive, not when they are gone. Everything possible will be done to ensure their welfare is improved,” he said.

Earlier, the chairman of the Ekiti State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Adetola Popoola, commended the Accord Party candidate for the visit.

Popoola said the engagement marked the first time a governorship aspirant seeking to contest the 2026 election had formally interacted with the union, adding that pensioners remained critical stakeholders in the state’s socio-economic development.

He called on political leaders and candidates to prioritise the welfare of retirees and ordinary citizens, noting that pensioners had served the state diligently and deserved adequate support in retirement.
