Nigerian, Canada-based lawyer and businessman, Ekundayo George, has unveiled a roadmap to a successful start-up, business planning, business funding, project management models, and sales and marketing secrets in his books, "Success in Business".
In the Series, organised into five volumes and 36 chapters grouped by theme, the author—who is a regulator with broad and deep experience in the United States of America and Canada melds background facts, theories, formulas, and examples with real-world scenarios to take readers through starting, scaling, facing situations in, navigating smoothly through, and sustaining a modern-day business.
In Vol. I: "Starting", he covers pre-planning for start-ups, writing a business plan, getting funding, sales and marketing, project management, and business methods for evaluating opportunities using the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis and hks own created :TOP: Analysis.
He has also listed 29 potential job types and gigs that do not require a fixed office in most places and sometimes do not need any certificate or degree, for those seeking business or hustle ideas. He groups these job types under the terms Proxy, Moxie, and Velocity.
In Vol. II: "Scaling", he discusses how to handle staff and customers as businesses grow, while in Vol. III: "Situations", the author examines structuring management, staying compliant with laws and regulations. Volume III also includes a very detailed, step by step guide for Corporate Crisis Management.
Vol. IV is all about understandling, handling, and safely and securely working with Data. The recent launch of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and news of several high level data breaches, make this a very timely and very advisable read for anybody dealing with data on a serious level. The author also discusses what tech players are doing with cloud computing, blockchain, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as what these developments have done for the tech industry as a whole—an industry playing an increasingly significant role in human lives.
Finally, in the last volume, V: "Sustaining", Ekundayo George lays down strategies for protecting gains to date, introducing another simple formula that will captivate readers, as well as how best to maintain the pace of progress and success without burnout and without taking shortcuts that could lead to disaster, as many people do when chasing money.
He also presents additional ideas on different businesses, such as recycling and apps for job sharing or job rotation.
When asked about his target audience, he said: “My target audience is everybody because pretty much everyone is hustling. Some hustle to pay school fees, others hustle in their main jobs, and then we have those hustling and making it big, especially in tech, fashion, and entertainment.
“Many people are also hustling in side jobs or survival mode while waiting for the major one to land, or for their ‘japa.’ Whether the side hustle becomes the main source of income or you are still hustling, there is something here for everyone at every stage.”
On why he wrote the books and how people should approach them, he said: “I enjoy writing. I published a 60-page Environmental Law note on the interplay of Environmental Protection and National Security in 2003. That article has been downloaded over 600 times since 2010, in addition to paid subscribers and online readers of the William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review.
“Now, I think it’s time to share some of my observations, tips, tricks, and anecdotes. The focus is on basic business, as attorney-client privilege covers much of everything else, and the overly colourful stories of our misspent youth must wait for our memoirs.
“I would love it if everyone started at the beginning and then methodically and logically worked their way through the series. The beauty of this series, though, is that each volume contains a biography, as well as a listing of the entire five-volume table of contents. This allows readers to jump right in and start where their interest is piqued or where they feel their need is most acute.
“However, if you read all five volumes and are still unsure about your next steps, let us check it out and help you work it out, as it may be time to consult for a customized solution. But, as we say in the books more than once, please be sure that your answer is not found in a volume you did not read and that you could have received without a consulting fee.
“I have been in the frontline trenches: door-to-door sales, referral sales, incoming and outgoing call centres, customer service, care, and retention. I have made decisions that matter, including hiring, firing, assigning work, committing funds, and securing contractors and others.
“I have seen and worked on the business side for over 40 years—the government from the inside, and the legal top side—with an Ivy League legal education and work experience with businesses, lawyers and law firms, and governments in both Canada and the United States.
“If I write about it, then I have likely experienced it. I have distilled this hard-earned knowledge and experience into what I believe are some of the best business books currently on the market. This is all real human experience, not AI creation or hallucination.
“This is opportunity knocking and your chance to acquire these hard-earned business strategies for success.”
