Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, was laid to rest in Abuja on Sunday following her death in Cairo, Egypt.

The family matriarch died on Friday after a brief illness while receiving medical treatment in the Egyptian capital.

Her remains were flown into Abuja on Sunday ahead of burial rites conducted in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Funeral prayers (Janazah) were held at the National Mosque, Abuja, after which she was interred at the Gudu Cemetery.

The burial drew a cross-section of political leaders, including serving and former public office holders as well as opposition figures.

Among those present were former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Other dignitaries, including political associates and family members, were also in attendance to pay their last respects.

Meanwhile, the former governor, who had been in detention for over a month, was released on compassionate grounds shortly after news of his mother’s death.
