Journalists have been urged to uphold professionalism, safety, and ethical standards as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.

The call was made at the 2026 Annual Press Week lecture organised by the Lagos State Governor’s Office Correspondents (LAGOCO) at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, commended LAGOCO for promoting professionalism within the media, describing elections as a critical democratic process often perceived differently by stakeholders.

“While journalists see elections as a tool for democratic progress, many citizens approach them with a war-like mindset. This underscores the need for responsible reportage and national unity,” he said.

He urged journalists and other stakeholders to embrace peaceful conduct before, during, and after elections, adding that grievances should be addressed through lawful means.

Delivering his keynote lecture titled “Election and Ethical Journalism: The Role of the Media in Safeguarding Democracy,” Media expert Taiwo Olapade urged journalists to exercise caution as political activities intensify.

He noted that the growth of digital and social media has expanded information reach but also increased the risk of misinformation.

“Journalists must ensure fairness by providing all parties the right of reply and avoiding one-sided narratives,” he said.

Olapade also advised journalists to prioritise safety and verify electoral information through official channels such as the Independent National Electoral Commission to avoid misinformation and legal consequences.

He added that the media must continue to play a responsible role in safeguarding democracy and promoting national stability.
