Amupitan: It may not be possible to achieve 100% per perfect election

...assures there will be no glitch in 2027

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that electronic transmission of election results will not be a challenge in the 2027 general election.

The INEC chairman stressed that necessary measures have been put in place to ensure credible polls in 2027.

Amupitan spoke during a citizens’ townhall meeting organised by Civil Society Network on Election Integrity on Sunday in Abuja.

Addressing concerns over result transmission, he said the commission has the capacity to transmit results electronically and dismissed fears of network-related problems.

“I don't see the issue of transmission as a problem; the problem is not the network but the adequacy of the networks we have,” Amupitan stated.

He further reassured Nigerians that technical hitches experienced in previous elections, particularly the 2023 general election, have been resolved.

“Glitch has been eliminated. It will not resurface in Nigeria,” he said, adding, “We have the capacity to transmit results electronically.”

While acknowledging past shortcomings, the INEC chairman admitted that there were logistical challenges during the FCT area council election.

“We admit there were logistic issues in the FCT election,” he said.

He explained that result management and logistics remain two critical areas the commission is working to strengthen in order to boost transparency and credibility.

“Result management and logistics are two basic issues that from our own end, we are trying to see how best we are able to manage it very well so as to enhance the transparency and credibility of the system,” he said.

Amupitan appealed to Nigerians to moderate expectations, noting that although the commission is committed to improvement, achieving absolute perfection may not be immediately possible.

“Let me just appeal to Nigerians because I have noticed now that what Nigerians desire is a perfect election, and INEC will strive as much as possible to give this country the best election; however, we may not be able to achieve a 100% perfect election for now,” he said.

Reiterating the point, he added: “What Nigerians need is a perfect election but we will try but we may not be able to achieve 100 per cent.”

Despite this, he expressed optimism about the future, declaring that the 2027 general election would mark a significant improvement.

“2027 will be the best election Nigerians will have,” Amupitan said.

He also called for reforms in legislative drafting to make laws more accessible to citizens.

“Nigeria needs a simple language legislation, whereby it will be possible for Nigerians to understand and appreciate the provisions of every section,” he added.
