Chief Basil Ani, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has commended Governor Peter Mbah for notable improvements in road infrastructure across Enugu State, while urging urgent action on electricity and water supply challenges affecting residents.

Ani contrasted Enugu’s situation with Abia State, praising Governor Alex Otti for restoring power to communities and improving residents’ access to electricity.

He noted that while Abia citizens enjoy reliable power and better healthcare, many in Enugu still depend on expensive water tankers due to delays in basic water supply projects.

“Roads are commendable and ease movement, but they don’t quench thirst or light homes,” Ani said. “Conference centres and hotels boost prestige, but basic services like water and power directly improve daily lives and health outcomes.”

Highlighting the impact on households, he said water tanker prices have surged from N12,000 to N35,000 per 1,000 gallons, straining urban and rural families.

Ani recalled Governor Mbah’s 2023 campaign promise to deliver water to every home within 180 days of assuming office and noted that Enugu’s 2025 budget of N971 billion allocated 86 per cent to capital expenditure, funding projects including 71 urban roads completed in the governor’s first year.

He further cited ongoing projects, such as a N25 billion International Conference Centre at Okpara Square and a planned 335–380 room five-star hotel, describing them as positive steps for economic development and tourism, but emphasizing that basic utilities remain critical.

On Abia State, Ani highlighted December 2025 efforts that restored electricity to 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area, ending a nine-year blackout.

He credited the February 2024 commissioning of the 141-megawatt Geometric Power Plant for supplying nine local government areas in the Aba ring-fence zone, revitalising businesses, powering factories, illuminating markets, and reducing reliance on costly generators.

“Businesses are rebounding, with traders and manufacturers returning after years of relocation,” he said, noting that the revival has sparked optimism for sustained economic growth.
