A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former member of the National Assembly,  Senator Ayoade Adeseun, has advocated establishment of a military base in Ogbomoso, to prevent bandits’ incursion from Kwara State.

Adeseun, in an interview at the weekend, decried the killings of forest guards at the National Park, Ikoyi Ile and the reported invasion of communities in neighbouring Kwara State.

He said: ‘’The porous nature of our borders made it easier for the bandits and suspected herders to invade our communities.’’

The former lawmaker said the bandits were capitalising on the non- presence of military personnel at some of the borders to invade the communities.

He said: ‘’We are very close to the border. People migrate across, and we don’t know where they will show up tomorrow. So, we need to be prepared. We need to be ready.

‘’They killed many people at Ikoyi Ile. At Oloka village many lives were lost. And like you said, they are now sending a battalion of troops there, but this is an afterthought.

‘’We can already see the indications, because of the porous borders, this can escalate. They should give us something here.

This will be my appeal to the Federal Government to please send a small military unit to this area. We have the land to accommodate them.

‘’Ibadan is not too far from us, but if something happens along this axis, Oke-Ogun has a battalion at Shaki. Between Shaki and here is about a three-hour drive. If something happens here, before anybody comes from Shaki or Ibadan, all hell would have broken loose.

‘’It is important that we have some kind of military outpost. Even if it is not a full base, we need a combat presence here.

‘’There is an educational command around Ilorin, but they are educational not combatant. We need a combat formation, and this is an assignment some of us are hoping to take on in the next few years.’’

Adeseun disclosed how he facilitated N500million for the establishment of Federal Polytechnic in Ayede community, Ogbomoso.

He described the project as a deliberate intervention to expand federal educational presence and promote technical skills development in the state.

He said the idea for the institution was conceived during his first stint at the National Assembly while serving in the House Committee on Education.
