The Eko Tourism Foundation (ETF) and the Mexican Consulate are set to establish a tourism and investment alliance aimed at positioning Lagos as a global tourism destination.
The partnership is expected to serve as a strong bridge between Mexico and Nigeria, one that fosters understanding, drives economic growth and strengthens people-to-people connections.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Mexican Consulate at its Ikeja GRA office in Lagos, Chairman of ETF and former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the foundation is willing to co-create programmes, host delegations and drive initiatives that will bring the collaboration to life.
He said: “We see today not merely as a courtesy visit, but as the beginning of a strategic relationship that connects two great cultures and unlocks new frontiers in tourism and investment.

“This partnership can serve as a powerful bridge between Mexico and Nigeria that fosters understanding, drives economic growth and strengthens people-to-people connections.
“Lagos provides a uniquely strong platform for investment. Its dynamic business environment, large market and cultural vibrancy make it an ideal destination for tourism-driven ventures.”
Mohammed acknowledged that global perceptions of Nigeria are sometimes shaped by security concerns but noted that such collaborations present an opportunity to tell a different story.
“It is sad that some Nigerians demarket the country. This must stop because it drives away foreign investment and projects a negative image. Many countries will not invest in a nation that its own citizens demarket,” he said.
The Honorary Consul, Mr Biodun Otunola, said there is a significant tourism gap in Lagos that the collaboration aims to bridge.

He said: “The strategic collaboration is important in addressing existing gaps in the sector.
Such a partnership will significantly enhance Lagos tourism.
“There is a huge tourism gap that needs to be filled, and collaboration between both countries will play a vital role in bridging the divide.
“Stronger ties between Mexico and Lagos will have a positive impact on the state’s economy as ideas are shared.”
Otunola urged the state to leverage Nigerian celebrities to boost tourism and take greater ownership of the popular “Detty December” festivities.

“We need to leverage the many celebrities in the country to promote tourism, as their global appeal can market Lagos to millions,” he added, assuring that Mexico is ready to collaborate on key initiatives.
A former President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mr Gabriel Idahosa, identified tourism, importation, exportation, food processing and ICT as sectors with strong potential for collaboration.
He said ETF is ready to work with the consulate to showcase Lagos to the world.
Other ETF members at the event included Erelu Dr Abiola Dosumu, Erelu Kuti IV of Lagos; Dr Tunde Lawrenson; Dr Iyadunmi Gbadebo; and Mr Karl Hala.
