Former Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, on Saturday declared his intention to contest the Kano North senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the All Progressives Congress.

Gwarzo made the declaration in an acceptance speech, saying he was bowing to “overwhelming calls” from elders, youths, women, political associates, and community leaders across the district.

“Your trust is not taken for granted. Your voices are not unheard. And your faith in me is deeply cherished,” he said, describing his move as a “collective responsibility” to deepen development and amplify the voice of Kano North at the national level.

With this declaration, Gwarzo would be locking horns with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin for the APC ticket of the Kano North Senatorial poll.

The former minister anchored his declaration on what he called a 30-year record of service. He listed his tenure as Executive Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government for four terms between 1991 and 2006, noting projects in rural electrification and the establishment of a vocational training centre during the period.

Gwarzo also cited his stint as Deputy Governor of Kano State from 2007 to 2011, where he supervised the Ministry of Water Resources.

He pointed to the construction of the 75 million litres per day Watari Water Works and the expansion of reticulation under the Greater Kano Water Project as key milestones.

On the political front, he recalled serving as the pioneer Interim State Chairman of the APC in Kano between 2013 and 2014.

“Together, we laid a strong and enduring foundation that contributed to the growth and success of our great party in the state,” he said.

He added that as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development from 2023 to 2024, he contributed to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme and facilitated presidential interventions that benefited Kano state.

In his speech, Gwarzo praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Renewed Hope Agenda and the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. He also commended ongoing federal projects, including the Kano-Kaduna-Abuja highway, the AKK Gas Pipeline, and the Kaduna-Kano-Jigawa-Katsina-Maradi rail line.

He extended appreciation to Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for “commendable strides in infrastructural development, education, urban renewal,” and efforts to address gratuities and pensions.

Gwarzo said his decision followed “wide consultations, deep reflection, and prayers for Allah’s guidance.”

“To the glory of Allah Almighty, I hereby declare my intention to contest for the Kano North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, under our great party, the All Progressives Congress, APC,” he stated.

He asked for the continued support, prayers, and counsel of constituents, pledging to work “for a future that reflects the hopes and aspirations of our people”.
