The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to prioritise former student leader in its forthcoming primaries.

The organisation said such a move would deepen youth inclusion in governance and strengthen the party’s political base ahead of future elections.

The call came as NANS formally presented a House of Representatives nomination form to its immediate past president, Lucky Emonefe, who is seeking to represent Ethiope Federal Constituency of Delta State in the National Assembly.

The student body said its decision to purchase the nomination form for Emonefe was in recognition of his contributions to the students’ movement and his leadership credentials, insisting that former student leaders remain well-positioned to serve effectively in elective offices.

Speaking during the presentation on Wednesday, NANS President, Olusola Ladoja, said the association’s decision to purchase the form for Emonefe was rooted in his track record of service and leadership.

“We took the decision to purchase the nomination form for Comrade Lucky Emonefe in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the student body during his tenure,” Ladoja said.

He stressed that former student leaders possess the experience and grassroots connection needed to thrive in elective offices, urging the ruling party to leverage that advantage.

“We urge the APC to give due consideration to former student leaders aspiring for elective positions, particularly Comrade Emonefe,” he said.

Ladoja added that Emonefe’s involvement in the actualisation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and his alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu position him as a credible candidate.

According to him, the APC stands to gain electorally if it opens its doors wider to young leaders with proven records.

“The ruling party will attract massive support from students across the country if individuals with strong backgrounds in student leadership are given the opportunity to serve,” he said.

Responding, Emonefe described the gesture as unexpected and motivating, saying it reinforced the trust Nigerian students reposed in him.

“This gesture is both surprising and encouraging. It reflects the trust and belief reposed in me by Nigerian students,” he said.

He pledged to focus on youth development, education, and economic empowerment if elected, while promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

“I remain committed to delivering effective and people-centred representation,” Emonefe added.

The event was attended by student leaders and stakeholders, many of whom commended NANS for advocating increased youth participation in politics.

NANS, the umbrella body representing students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria, has long served as a platform for grooming future political leaders.

Several former student activists have transitioned into national politics, reinforcing calls for greater youth inclusion in governance.
