APC receives over 500 defectors

Former Pro-Chancellor of University of Calabar, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, has accepted calls from stakeholders of All Progressives Congress in Ward 2 Amaitolu, Mbutu, Umuojima in Osisioma Local Government to contest Abia Central Senatorial seat in 2027 general election.

Her decision came as the party welcomed over 500 defectors from other political parties in the ward, reportedly in support of her aspiration.

Party leaders said they urged Nwaogu to run due to what they said is a leadership vacuum and poor representation in the district over the years.

They described her as a seasoned banker, politician and public servant with a credible track record in private and public sectors.

The stakeholders, including a former Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Enyinna Ubani, and Mrs. Clara Nwaobilor, said Nwaogu possesses the experience and capacity to reposition the zone.

They criticised the incumbent lawmaker of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for alleged underperformance and warned the APC against fielding candidates lacking the political strength to deliver victory in 2027.

Ward Chairman, Chief Iheanyi Ugwuzor, said the decision to draft Nwaogu into the race was unanimous, describing her as the most qualified among aspirants.

Nwaogu thanked party leaders and members for the confidence reposed in her, noting her decision followed consultations and prayers.

She pledged to provide effective representation and attract development to the district.

The former senator, who said she would serve only one term, promised to address marginalisation in the zone and ensure fair power rotation.

She also called for support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC candidates in 2027.
