Olawande Olayinka Jaiyeola, a Nigerian-born scholar based in the United States of America, has called for urgent reforms in the public health sector.

He warned that rising costs, unequal access, and weak leadership structures continue to undermine the effectiveness of healthcare delivery.

Jaiyeola, a researcher at Westcliff University, Irvine, California, USA, and the University of South Los Angeles, made the call in a research work titled, “Healthcare Leadership for the Future: Building Sustainable Public Healthcare Systems with the HFSC Model.” In it, she proposed a leadership-driven framework to address systemic challenges in healthcare.

In the study, the scholar highlighted the growing pressure on healthcare systems, particularly in developed economies, where increasing patient demand and operational costs have widened the funding gaps.

According to her, financial sustainability remains one of the most critical challenges, as governments struggle to balance limited resources with the growing healthcare needs of their populations.

To address these concerns, Jaiyeola introduced the Healthcare Financial Sustainability and Cost-Effectiveness (HFSC) model, which aligns financial discipline with improved patient outcomes.

She pointed out that inefficiencies in resource allocation remain a major issue, with urban centres often receiving more attention and funding than rural and underserved communities.

The researcher emphasized that strong and visionary leadership is essential to reversing these trends, adding that healthcare reforms cannot succeed without leaders capable of aligning policy, funding, and service delivery.

She further explained that modern healthcare leadership must go beyond routine administration to include innovation, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making.

The scholar added that the HFSC model promotes value-based healthcare delivery, focusing not only on reducing costs but also on achieving better outcomes relative to spending.

Jaiyeola also highlighted the importance of equity, stressing that sustainable healthcare systems must guarantee fair access to quality healthcare services for all populations, regardless of socio-economic status or location.

She said that lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic further exposed structural weaknesses in healthcare systems and underscored the need for resilience and adaptability.

Jaiyeola recommended increased investment in innovation, particularly in digital health technologies such as telemedicine, to improve efficiency and expand access to care.

She also called for stronger collaboration across sectors, in line with global best practices that integrate health considerations into broader policy decisions.
