Nigerian entrepreneur and beauty industry pioneer, Tara Fela-Durotoye, has shared insight on leadership, legacy, and family life in a three-part appearance on The Echo Podcast, offering a reflection on principles that have shaped her career and private life.

Speaking with host, Olushola Olaleye; Fela-Durotoye reflected on her journey as founder and chief executive officer of House of Tara International, one of Nigeria’s pioneering beauty brands. Across the episodes, she emphasised that sustainable success is rooted in relationships and intentional leadership rather than rapid expansion alone.

“People don’t care about what you care about until they know that you care about them,” she said, describing the guiding philosophy behind how she built her company. Fela-Durotoye noted that business results are often a byproduct of how well leaders invest in and nurture their teams.

She likened leadership to stewardship, arguing that effective leaders are responsible for developing the people entrusted to them rather than simply extracting performance. In an era where scale and speed are often prioritised, she suggested that long-term sustainability depends on cultivating strong internal cultures.

When asked about legacy, Fela-Durotoye framed it around purpose and impact rather than brand recognition. She said legacy begins with clarity about one’s calling and alignment with that purpose.

Her long-term goal, she explained, is to empower entrepreneurs in Africa to build structured, sustainable businesses capable of thriving beyond their founders. For her, legacy is measured less by public visibility and more by how others are able to succeed because of her influence.

The conversation also touched on her marriage to Fela Durotoye, who she described as a life partner and a ‘thinking partner’.  She noted that their shared commitment to each other’s visions has strengthened their professional and personal lives.

Fela-Durotoye said the same intentionality guiding her business decisions shapes how she and her husband raise their three sons. She stressed importance of modelling values, such as kindness, discipline, and empathy at home, arguing that children absorb behaviour more from observation than instruction.

“Charity and legacy must begin at home,” she said, adding that professional success should not come at the expense of family presence and responsibility.

Throughout the three episodes, Fela-Durotoye presented an integrated approach to leadership which is one that does not separate public achievement from private character. Leadership, entrepreneurship, marriage, and parenting, she suggested, are interconnected expressions of intentional living.

The podcast series adds to ongoing conversations around business leadership and personal development in Nigeria, offering listeners a perspective that blends corporate strategy with values-based living.
