The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service has extended the deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns by one month, giving taxpayers in Abuja more time to comply with the law.
The new deadline has been moved from March 31 to April 30, 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Head of Corporate Communications, Mustapha Sumaila, said the Acting Executive Chairman of the Service, Michael Ango, approved the extension to allow residents to submit accurate returns and improve compliance.

Ango explained that March 31 remains the official deadline every year, but the extra time was granted to support taxpayers who may need more time to complete the process.
“The extension is intended to provide taxpayers with additional time to complete and submit accurate returns and improve overall compliance within the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.
He urged residents to take their tax obligations seriously and file their returns without delay. “Voluntary compliance should be embraced as a routine civic responsibility and a vital contribution to national development,” Ango said.
The FCT-IRS boss also said that all tax returns must be submitted electronically through the agency’s official tax portal, as part of efforts to strengthen digital tax administration.
He described the platform as reliable and easy to use, encouraging taxpayers to take advantage of the system to file their returns promptly.

According to him, individuals must ensure that their personal details, especially their National Identification Number, phone number, and address, are correctly entered on the portal to avoid processing delays.
“The platform is secure, efficient, and accessible. Taxpayers should ensure their information is accurate when registering to avoid unnecessary delays,” he said.
Ango added that support is available for those who may face difficulties during the process, advising them to visit any FCT-IRS office or contact the agency through its official communication channels.
The Service said the extension takes immediate effect and urged all eligible taxpayers in the Federal Capital Territory to use the additional time to meet their obligations.
