Performing the ground-breaking ceremony in Abuja on Saturday, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the project as a historic initiative that underscores the intersection of faith, national development, and human well-being.
Akume said the project goes beyond a ceremonial undertaking, noting that it symbolizes a deliberate effort to embed spiritual reflection within critical national infrastructure.
According to a statement issued by Chris Ugwuegbulam, Head of Information and Public Relations in the SGF's office, Akume said the Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre will serve as a sanctuary of hope, peace, and renewal for travelers, pilgrims, and the Christian faithful.
“The facility will provide a sacred space for individuals to pause, reflect, and reconnect with God amidst the demands and uncertainties of travel,” he said.
The SGF stressed the timeliness of the initiative, noting that in an era of increasing mobility and pressure, the need for spiritual support systems has become more pressing.

He described the center as a consecrated haven open to all, designed to uplift hearts, ease burdens, and strengthen faith, regardless of the pressures associated with modern travel.
Akume further noted that the project highlights the role of faith in fostering national unity, moral values, compassion, and a shared sense of humanity, adding that it stands as a beacon of hope not just for Christians but for the broader Nigerian society.
He also linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s broader agenda to improve the passenger experience and upgrade aviation infrastructure.
According to him, modern airports must evolve from transit hubs to spaces that cater to passengers' emotional and spiritual needs, reflecting a more holistic approach to development.
The SGF commended the promoters and partners behind the project for their vision and commitment, urging sustained collaboration to ensure its timely completion.
He expressed optimism that, when completed, the chapel and pilgrims' centre would serve generations of travelers, offering comfort to the troubled, strength to the weary, and inspiration to all who pass through its doors.
