The Federal Government has commenced construction of an ecumenical airport chapel and pilgrims centre at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, in a move aimed at integrating spiritual support into Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, performed the ground-breaking ceremony in Abuja on Saturday, describing the project as a landmark initiative at the intersection of faith, national development and human well-being.
According to a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF, Chris Ugwuegbulam, Akume said the facility would serve as a sanctuary for travellers, pilgrims and the Christian faithful.
He noted that the project represents a deliberate effort to incorporate spaces for spiritual reflection within critical national infrastructure.
“The facility will provide a sacred space for individuals to pause, reflect and reconnect with God amidst the demands and uncertainties of travel,” he said.
The SGF stressed the timeliness of the initiative, pointing out that in an era of increasing mobility and pressure, the need for spiritual support systems has become more compelling.

He described the centre as a consecrated haven open to all, designed to uplift hearts, ease burdens and strengthen faith, regardless of the pressures associated with modern travel.
Akume further noted that the project highlights the role of faith in fostering national unity, moral values, compassion and a shared sense of humanity, adding that it stands as a beacon of hope not just for Christians, but for the broader Nigerian society.
He also linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s broader agenda of improving passenger experience and upgrading infrastructure in the aviation sector.
According to him, modern airports must evolve beyond serving as transit hubs to becoming spaces that cater to the emotional and spiritual needs of passengers, reflecting a more holistic development approach.
The SGF commended the promoters and partners behind the project for their vision and commitment, urging sustained collaboration to ensure its timely completion.
He expressed optimism that, when completed, the chapel and pilgrims centre would serve generations of travellers, offering comfort to the troubled, strength to the weary and inspiration to all who pass through its doors.
