The Federal Government has officially launched “Snacks for Thought” (PBAT FEEDS), a strategic breakfast initiative under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP), aimed at enhancing learning outcomes through improved child nutrition.

The initiative provides nutritious morning meals to school children before the start of academic activities, addressing hunger—one of the most critical barriers to learning.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the National Programme Manager of RH-NHGSFP, Dr. Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale, described the initiative as a decisive step toward strengthening Nigeria’s human capital foundation.

“The smarter you are, depends on how developed your knowledge base is—but you cannot be smarter than your knowledge base,” she said.

Adebowale emphasised that “Snacks for Thought” is not merely a feeding intervention but a national development strategy that integrates nutrition, education, and productivity.

She said: "The programme is expected to improve student concentration and cognitive performance, increase school attendance and retention, strengthen local agricultural value chains through structured procurement and empower women, youth, and smallholder farmers.

"Today, Nigeria made a decision. A decision that no child should sit in a classroom hungry. A decision that learning must begin with nourishment. A decision that the future of this nation will no longer be built on empty stomachs.

"With the launch of 'Snacks for Thought', Nigeria is investing not just in food but in focus, knowledge, and the future. Because a hungry child cannot learn. And a nation that ignores this cannot develop. This is more than a programme; it is a commitment."

The “Adopt-a-School” platform under Snacks for Thought was also launched, providing an opportunity for government institutions, private sector organisations, and development partners to directly support school feeding efforts and expand programme reach nationwide.

The launch event brought together ministers, members of the National Assembly, Directors-General, Managing Directors, development partners, and key stakeholders, demonstrating strong institutional alignment and national commitment.

At the heart of the event were schoolchildren—holding their meal packs—symbolizing a powerful shift in national priorities toward nutrition-driven education and inclusive development.

“Snacks for Thought” complements the existing school feeding programme by ensuring children are nourished at the start of the school day, thereby maximising the impact of classroom instruction.

This initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable human capital development, recognising that national growth begins with the well-being, nutrition, and cognitive development of its children.

The Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme is a flagship national social investment initiative focused on improving child nutrition, strengthening education outcomes, and supporting local agricultural systems across Nigeria.
