The Federal Government has concluded plans to establish a campus of Coventry University in Nigeria, a move aimed at providing affordable access to internationally recognised degrees without the need for students to travel abroad.
The initiative, anchored on a Transnational Education (TNE) partnership, is expected to significantly expand opportunities for Nigerian students to obtain UK-standard qualifications locally while reducing the financial burden on families.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, disclosed this during ongoing engagements in the United Kingdom, where he is accompanying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on an official visit.
According to a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, Folasade Boriowo, on Wednesday in Abuja, the minister is holding discussions with university leaders, investors, and development partners to finalise arrangements for the project.
According to the ministry, the proposed campus will be situated in Alaro City, Lagos State, and will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM), Business, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

“All degrees offered at the Nigeria campus will be equivalent to those obtained in the United Kingdom,” the Minister said.
Alausa said that admissions are projected to begin between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Alausa noted that the partnership would not only reduce the cost of international education but also strengthen Nigeria’s human capital development.
“We want Nigerian parents to enjoy their children being at home while still receiving a world-class UK education,” he said.
The Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade, reiterated its commitment to positioning Nigeria as a hub for global education, innovation, and skills development.
The initiative is also expected to attract foreign investment into the education sector and create new opportunities for academic and professional advancement within the country.
