The Lagos Branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, (FIDA), Nigeria and the Ojora of Ijora kingdom, Oba Fatai Oyeyinka Aromire have pledged to collaborate with other legal and law enforcement agencies to tackle Sexual and Genda Based Violence (SGBV).
The decision was reached when the Lagos Branch of FIDA Nigeria held a Free Legal Clinic and Women Empowerment Sensitisation programme in Lagos to expand access to justice for women.
The event was held at the palace of Ojora of Lagos at Ojora.
Members of the FIDA Nigeria, Lagos branch, also distributed food items to about 300 women in the Ijora community and its environs
Chairperson of FIDA Nigeria Lagos Branch, Mrs. Abimbola Badia Oladugba, said the outreach was designed for women, children, and widows in the community.
“FIDA is here in Ijora today as part of our community outreach,” she said.
“We are here to sensitise them on how to be a better version of themselves, better parents, and inform and educate them on measures to take against domestic and all forms of gender violence.
“Our was also designed to create awareness for widows who are mothers on how to be industrious and navigate life after the death of their spouse.”
The Chairperson noted that FIDA had worked in the area before and the response had been encouraging.
“We have been getting good feedback as we have been here before.
“Women have been reaching out about what they are going through and I am glad that a lot of women are here.”
According to her, the free legal clinic addresses a critical gap for residents who lack funds or information. “We have a free legal clinic in place and so many of them who have legal issues but do not have enough money to pursue them or don’t know where to go are all here to talk to FIDA and expect FIDA intervention in such cases.”

“I thank the women lawyers for choosing my domain for this project,” the Oba said.
“If you look around my community, Ijora, Badiya, Orile, Ajegunle, you will see that the reason why they are here today is to solve a problem that is a, long-standing issue. So I appreciate them for choosing my community.”
The monarch stressed his personal and strong stance against violence.
“Engagement, support, and collaboration to stop SGBV that’s what we have been doing. Everyone has their own rights and I don’t accept violence. People know me for that,” he stated.
“As the Oba of this community. I don’t like violence and anyone who does anything wrong I will hand him or her over to the police authority,” he added.
