FIFA has officially approved the international switch of Arthur Okonkwo, clearing the goalkeeper to represent the Super Eagles after months of uncertainty over his international future.

Born in England to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo previously featured for England at youth level, representing the U16, U17 and U18 sides. Despite progressing through England's youth system, he never received a senior invitation, leaving the door open for a switch to Nigeria.

FIFA's Transfer Matching System has now processed the change of association, confirming that Okonkwo is fully eligible to play for Nigeria in all competitive fixtures.

The development comes at a crucial time for the Super Eagles, who are preparing for a high-profile friendly against Portugal in June. Head coach Eric Chelle now has increased depth in the goalkeeping department as competition for the starting position intensifies.

Current options include Stanley Nwabali, who has recently established himself as first choice, alongside Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho — both of whom carry significant international experience. All three will now face added competition following Okonkwo's eligibility confirmation.

The Arsenal academy product, who has gained valuable experience in the English Championship, is widely expected to be considered for upcoming call-ups as Nigeria continues squad planning. His arrival strengthens options in a key position and could reshape the goalkeeping hierarchy ahead of future international assignments. If selected, Okonkwo could be in line for a senior debut in the coming fixtures.
