A pressure group, Justice and Equity Forum, Lafia, has described as scandalous the plan by the Nasarawa State governor, Abdullahi Sule, to contest elective office after serving his second term.

The Forum, in a statement issued on its behalf by its General Secretary, Comrade Bitrus Awwal, and made available to The Nation, said the governor had no moral high ground to contest for any elective office after making a public vow that he would not serve in any elective position after completing his second term as Nasarawa state governor.

Governor Sule was first elected governor in 2019, succeeding former governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, and subsequently won his second term in March 2023, after INEC declared him the winner amidst considerable protests due to alleged electoral irregularities, particularly contested vote totals in two wards of Lafia.

In the statement which reads in part, the group said, “Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state is a bad example of how not to be a politician. It is true that in this climate politicians have become untrustworthy, but we had thought that Governor Sule was going to prove bookmakers wrong when he had previously ruled out any future political ambition during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television in January 2024, shortly after winning his second term bid.

“But fast forward to 2026, Governor Sule has since reversed himself and frantically trying every trick in the books to hoodwink the unsuspecting members of the public and has announced plans to contest for a Senate seat in 2027.

“From available public information, the governor, who is serving his second and final term, is now set to vie for the Nasarawa North senatorial seat in the next general elections. To attempt a horse of recall, during the much publicised interview on Channels TV Politics Today anchored by Seun Okinbaloye, Governor Sule at the time said, “I came in only to be a governor. I have no intention to run for the office of a senator. You can keep this tape and play it one day.”

“But from all feelers, the governor will be contesting for the senate seat. According to the Special Assistant on Social Media to the Governor, Ango Ngharni Emmanuel, in a Facebook post he told the general public that the governor has now decided to enter for the Senate race, having “accepted the clarion call to contest” for the legislative position, following mounting pressure from political stakeholders and supporters within the ruling party.”

Pressed further, the Forum said, “What Governor Sule has done by that singular action is an insult on our collective psyche and sense of judgement,”adding that “his action is akin to gross insensitivity, against morality and a bad example of how not to play politics.”
