A non-governmental organisation, Kehinde Oshilaja Foundation for People Living with Disabilities, has appealed to the government to integrate sign language into the curricula of primary and secondary schools across Nigeria, as part of efforts to promote inclusivity and equal access to education.

The appeal was made by the foundation’s Coordinator, Comrade Kehinde Oshilaja, during a charity outreach programme held over the weekend at Evans Square, Ebute-Meta, Lagos.

The event featured distribution of food items, ‘Jakar’ and ‘Zakat’ to vulnerable members of the community, particularly persons living with disabilities.

Oshilaja said making sign language a part of the educational system would improve communication, learning opportunities and social integration for hearing-impaired individuals.

He urged the government to provide adequate shelter and social support systems for persons living with disabilities, noting that many remained vulnerable.

He said the foundation’s activities were rooted in religious principles of compassion and charity, as enshrined in the teachings of Islam.

The Chief Imam of Ahmadiyya Central Mosque, Lagos Mainland Local Government, Imam Rasaki Bello, said the distribution of ‘Zakat’ and other charitable acts aligned with the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet.

He noted that while acts of charity had been reduced to mere social gestures, true adherence required sincerity and compliance with divine instructions.

Bello cautioned against insincerity in charitable giving, stressing that individuals could not deceive God and must strive to follow prescribed religious obligations to receive spiritual rewards.

The programme attracted members of the community, religious leaders and beneficiaries, highlighting the growing need for inclusive policies and sustained social interventions to improve the welfare of persons living with disabilities.
