No fewer than four women lost their lives, and nine other passengers sustained varying degrees of injury in a motor accident at Agulu Lake along the Nanka-Agulu road in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The crash, which occurred at about 6:18 p.m. on Friday, involved 19 persons and four vehicles: a Toyota Hiace (Reg. No. HAL676YG), a Shuttle (Reg. No. UKP274YA), a trailer, and a Toyota Hilux without registration numbers.

It was gathered that the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when the vehicle conveying them reportedly lost control while descending toward a narrow bridge and collided with other vehicles.

Emergency responders and sympathisers worked to rescue survivors and evacuate the deceased, while drivers of the affected vehicles were said to have left the scene shortly after the incident.

Confirming the crash, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, SRC Margaret Onabe, attributed the incident to excessive speed and loss of control.

She said, "A fatal road traffic crash occurred on 27th February 2026, at Agulu Lake, Nanka-Agulu road. The crash involved 4 vehicles.

"The probable cause was speed and loss of control. There were no eyewitnesses to the crash, as all the drivers fled the scene.

"However, according to observations by the FRSC rescue team from Nanka outpost, it was noted that the vehicle was descending the hill at a high speed, lost control, and collided with three other vehicles.

"The total number of people involved was 19, comprising 6 male adults, 10 female adults, and three male children. Nine people, comprising two male adults, four female adults, and 3 male children, were injured, while 4 female adults were killed.

"Victims were taken to St Joseph Hospital, Adazi, for treatment; bodies were deposited at the hospital morgue. An alternative route was also created for traffic flow."

According to Onabe, Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno had commiserated with the deceased families, and wished the injured a quick recovery.

"She also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a swift recovery.

"She urged motorists to prioritize safety and drive cautiously to prevent preventable crashes," she added.
