No fewer than four women lost their lives while nine other passengers sustained varying degrees of injury in a multiple auto crash at Agulu Lake, Nanka-Agulu Road, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The accident, which occurred at about 6.18 pm on Friday, involved 19 persons and four vehicles, including a Toyota Hiace with Reg No: HAL676YG, a Shuttle with Reg No: UKP274YA, a trailer and Toyota Hilux with no registration numbers.

The Nation gathered that the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when the vehicle conveying them lost control while descending towards the narrow bridge and rammed into three other vehicles.

Emergency responders and sympathisers were said to have battled to rescue survivors and evacuate the dead while the drivers of the vehicles involved reportedly fled the scene immediately the incident occurred.

Confirming the crash, Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra State Command, SRC Margaret Onabe, attributed its cause to excessive speed and loss of control.

She said: "A fatal road traffic crash occurred on 27th February, 2026, at Agulu Lake, Nanka-Agulu Road. The crash involved four vehicles.

"The probable cause was speed and loss of control. There were no eyewitnesses to the crash, as all the drivers fled the scene.

"However, according to observations by the FRSC rescue team from Nanka outpost, it was noted that the vehicle was descending the hill at high speed, lost control and collided with three other vehicles.

"The total number of people involved was 19, comprising six male adults, 10 female adults and three male children.

“Nine people comprising two male adults, four female adults and three male children were injured, while four female adults were killed.

"Victims were taken to St Joseph Hospital Adazi for treatment. Bodies were deposited at the hospital morgue. An alternative route was also created for traffic flow."

According to Onabe, Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, had commiserated with the deceased persons' families, and wished the injured quick recovery.

"She also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured swift recovery.

"She urged motorists to prioritise safety and drive cautiously to prevent preventable crashes," she said.
