Veteran actor Francis Odega has criticised the current state of Nollywood, asserting that the quality of productions has deteriorated markedly.

Speaking during a recent podcast interview, Odega maintained that the industry’s golden era coincided with his active years, when filmmakers prioritised originality and craftsmanship.

He argued that contemporary productions often sacrifice depth for volume, with multiple films derived from a single script.

“Back then, one script would give us one unforgettable movie. But now, one script can give you seven bad movies, and that’s not right. Nollywood back then is far better than the Nollywood of today,” he said.

The actor, who has spent three decades in the industry, underscored his longstanding involvement, noting that he was part of the sector before it attained mainstream recognition.

“I was among of the people who made Nollywood. When we started, Nollywood was just a phenomenon. Our organisation used to be called Nigerian Actors Guild, NAG, before we later changed it to Actors’ Guild Of Nigeria, AGN.

“It was after then that Nollywood came. So, I am one of the pioneers of Nollywood. I have been in the movie industry for 30 years,” he explained.
