The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has condemned the mob attack on the Corps’ personnel and facilities after a crash at the Benin Toll Gate axis, assuring that those found culpable will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The Corps Marshal issued the warning in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Friday.

The Nation reports that a truck driver was killed in a collision involving two trucks along the Benin–Lagos Expressway on Thursday. Personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were also seriously injured during a rescue operation at the crash scene, and one of the officers later died from injuries sustained in the incident.

In the aftermath of the crash, an angry mob besieged and vandalised the RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command office. However, the swift intervention of security agencies brought the situation under control.

The Corps Marshal described the incident as “deeply regrettable and unacceptable" and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the crash as well as the circumstances that led to the mob action.

He thanked the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police for their swift and decisive intervention during the mob attack.

While condemning the attack on the Corps’ personnel and facilities, the FRSC boss reiterated that its operatives were carrying out their lawful duty to save lives when the tragic crash occurred.

The Corps Marshal commiserated with the family of the driver and the fallen officer, and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the crash as well as the circumstances that led to the mob action.

He reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians, and called on the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and be supportive of FRSC activities.
