Escalating tensions involving Iran have heightened risks around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane.

With alternative routes now being introduced due to security concerns, disruptions are impacting not just crude oil but a wide range of essential commodities.

Here are 10 key commodities disrupted by the Strait of Hormuz crisis

1. Crude Oil

Roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through the strait, making it the most critical oil transit chokepoint globally.

2. Petrol (Refined Fuel)

Beyond crude, refined petroleum products like petrol are also heavily transported through the route, meaning disruptions can directly affect fuel availability and pump prices worldwide.

3. Fertilizers (Urea and Ammonia)

The Gulf supplies a large share of global fertilizers, and any disruption could drive up food production costs globally.

4. Sulfur

A key industrial material used in fertilizers and battery production, sulfur supply constraints are already affecting global industries.

5. Methanol

Widely used in plastics and chemicals, methanol supply disruptions could ripple across manufacturing sectors.

6. Graphite Feedstocks

Essential for electric vehicle batteries, supply shortages could impact the global clean energy transition.

7. Aluminium

The Middle East is a key supplier, and disruptions are affecting industries like construction and transportation.

8. Helium

With Qatar producing a major share, shortages are impacting the healthcare and tech sectors.

9. Glycol (MEG)

Used in textiles and packaging, supply disruptions are hitting major manufacturing economies.

10. Iron Ore and Steel Pellets

Shipping challenges are slowing global steel production and increasing costs.
