Across the globe, countries facing ageing populations and declining rural communities are introducing incentives to attract new residents and boost economic activity.

From financial grants and housing support to business funding, these initiatives are designed to reverse population decline and breathe new life into underpopulated areas.

According to Forbes on Friday, at least six countries are currently offering relocation incentives to draw newcomers and stimulate local economies.

1. Italy

Italy stands out as a leading example of efforts to revive declining towns. In regions like Calabria, Sardinia, and Puglia, small communities are offering grants of up to €30,000 to individuals willing to relocate and start businesses. The country has also drawn global attention with symbolic €1 home schemes, though buyers are typically required to renovate the properties within a set period.

2. Switzerland

Switzerland’s alpine village of Albinen has launched one of Europe’s most publicised relocation programmes. To attract younger residents, the village offers about 25,000 Swiss francs per adult and 10,000 francs per child to families who commit to living there for at least 10 years and invest in property. The initiative aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the community.

3. Japan

Japan is confronting a major demographic challenge as rural areas lose residents to urban centres. Authorities have introduced subsidies to encourage families to move from cities like Tokyo to smaller towns. Some programmes offer up to one million yen per child, alongside additional support for housing and business development, as part of efforts to revitalise declining regions.

4. Spain

Spain has rolled out a range of incentives to rejuvenate rural communities. In regions such as Asturias and Galicia, authorities and private groups provide housing support, relocation grants, and job opportunities to attract families and entrepreneurs to ageing towns.

5. Greece

Targeted schemes in Greece focus on island communities experiencing population decline. On Antikythera Island, families are offered housing, land, and monthly stipends to encourage long-term settlement, supporting broader efforts to sustain small, remote populations.

6. Ireland

Under its “Our Living Islands” strategy, Ireland provides financial assistance for renovating vacant or derelict homes on remote islands. The initiative aims to reverse depopulation while stimulating local development and economic activity.
