The recent death of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, the brigade commander of the 29th Task Force Brigade, in an insurgent attack, shows the growing security challenges facing Nigeria.
Despite the army's efforts to repel the attackers, the loss of another high-ranking officer raises serious concerns about the country's war against terrorism.
The attack, which occurred around 12.30am on Thursday, was carried out by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters, who launched simultaneous assaults on multiple military positions in Benisheikh, a strategic town in Kaga Local Government Area along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.
Surviving soldiers described the incident as one of the most intense attacks in recent months.

In the aftermath of the attack, claims emerged that Brigadier General Braimah was killed due to a malfunctioning Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle.
However, military sources and individuals familiar with the late general disputed this.

From commanding elite units to representing Nigeria abroad, Brigadier General Braimah embodied the qualities of a seasoned officer who gave his life to protect his country. To many, his towering height and calm composure were his most striking features.
He hailed from Edo State. His educational background includes; Bachelor of Arts in History from Nigerian Defence Academy; Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Management from Chartered Management Institute.

Brigadier General Braimah had Master of Arts in Defence Studies (2016–2017) from King's College London. He had Master of Arts in International Relations and Strategic Studies (2004–2006) from Benue State University. He also had Masters in National Security Management and War Studies from National Defense University Islamabad.
Between September 2024 and March 2025, he served as Chief of Staff at the 6 Division Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. He coordinated staff operations, supervised training directives, and ensured readiness through contingency planning.
Braimah served as Chief Instructor and Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, from 2015 to 2019. He supervised training programs, mentored officers, and coordinated academic and field activities to build future military leaders.
Between December 2014 and October 2015, he commanded the Infantry Presidential Guards Battalion in Abuja. His responsibilities included ceremonial duties for the President, security management for the seat of government, and disaster response leadership.
In 2014, he oversaw logistics and administration for the Guards Brigade, coordinated ceremonial events, and advised on personnel matters, ensuring efficient service delivery.
Braimah also contributed internationally as a UN Observer in 2011–2012, monitoring ceasefire agreements and supporting intelligence analysis and capacity-building efforts.
