The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) has recorded 21 patents across robotics, energy systems and smart technologies in the past one year.
The premier petroleum varsity is also targeting over 10,000 students annually, on a new e-learning platform.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ezekiel Agbalagba, flanked by Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Engr. Professors Chiedu Owabor (Administration) and Omosede Osafile (Academic), among other management staff, disclosed this at a news conference marking his first year in office, Monday.
According to him, the university’s innovation drive is shifting from theory to market-ready solutions, citing inventions such as firefighting and security drones, autonomous delivery systems, biomass energy machines and smart LPG monitoring devices.
“We have deliberately moved toward solution-driven research with strong industrial relevance. Within one year, we recorded 21 patents and invention disclosures, reflecting a growing innovation ecosystem and a clear transition to applied, impact-driven research,” he said.
He added that the university was finalising a digital learning platform expected to admit more than 10,000 additional learners yearly, targeting professionals unable to attend full-time programmes.
“This platform removes the limitations of physical classrooms and expands access globally. It will deliver executive programmes, MBAs and specialised courses tailored to the oil and gas industry,” Agbalagba stated.
He said the institution had already achieved over 85 per cent readiness for accreditation of its distance learning programme.
