The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State has recorded a major milestone in its push to establish a teaching hospital, following full accreditation of its School of Health Sciences by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
The accreditation, granted after an assessment visit by an MDCN team led by Deputy Registrar Nnameka Nwakanma on 22 April, clears the way for the university’s College of Medicine to gain global visibility.
With the approval, the college will be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, opening international pathways for its graduates.

The council also approved an annual admission quota of 100 students for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.
The development comes shortly after the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted full accreditation to FUTA’s Medicine and Surgery programme earlier in April, following a successful resource verification exercise.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Community Central Planning Committee on the Establishment of FUTA Teaching Hospital described the dual approvals as a landmark achievement, reflecting years of advocacy and community-driven efforts.

The statement, signed by Tope Fayehun, chairman of the committee’s media and publicity sub-committee, said the milestone would significantly strengthen healthcare education and service delivery in Ondo State and beyond.
It attributed the success to the "resilience and unity" of Akure indigenes and stakeholders, alongside support from government and private contributors.
"This accreditation not only strengthens FUTA and the Teaching Hospital's role as a beacon of medical excellence but also reaffirms Akure's commitment to advancing national healthcare. The Committee remains dedicated to supporting the University and Hospital's growth and invites all stakeholders to join in celebrating this shared victory," the statement read in part.
