The Senate of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State has officially approved the duration of academic programmes offered by the institution, pegging all undergraduate programmes at five years.
The decision was taken at the inaugural meeting of the Senate, presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, who described the meeting as a historic milestone in the history of the institution.
“This is a historic moment in the life of a university that was created less than a year ago but has already commenced full academic activities. I congratulate you all for being a part of this. I can tell you for a fact that the event of today can never be erased in the history of this university,” he said.

According to the vice chancellor, the approved programme duration aligns with the university’s technological and environmental science focus while also meeting national regulatory standards.
He noted that the Senate’s decision provides a clear academic direction and institutional stability as the university progresses from take-off to consolidation.
During the meeting, the Senate also approved the academic calendar for the 2025/2026 academic session, marking another critical step in the university’s academic planning process.

Under the approved calendar, academic activities will proceed according to schedule, with the first semester examinations slated for April.
The Senate also approved February 27 as the official date for the university’s matriculation ceremony, during which newly admitted students will be formally inducted into the academic community.

It gave concurrence to the pre-degree programme earlier approved by the Governing Council, charging the management of the programme to ensure quality delivery and strict adherence to standards.
Aribisala reaffirmed that FUTES would be built on a tripod of excellent teaching, impactful research, and meaningful community service, describing these pillars as non-negotiable.
“This university is not about personal aggrandizement. It is about legacy. What we are building here must stand the test of time,” he said.
He emphasised that classrooms would serve not only as centres of learning but also as spaces for mentoring, character development, and leadership grooming.
According to him, discipline, punctuality, and academic integrity would be strongly enforced to sustain excellence.

The vice chancellor also disclosed that students remain central to the university’s development agenda, noting that there are deliberate efforts to create a conducive learning environment.
He also revealed that arrangements are at an advanced stage to enroll the university under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme to support students.
On infrastructure, Aribisala announced that efforts are ongoing to connect the university’s take-off site to the national grid, while the Federal Rural Electrification Agency is expected to provide solar power solutions for key facilities at the permanent site.
Meanwhile, members of the Senate hailed the vice chancellor for his visionary leadership and inclusive administrative approach, noting that his experience and clarity of purpose have accelerated the university’s take-off and positioned FUTES on a strong path towards global relevance.
