Over 7,000 women in Sokoto State have received Sallah relief materials as part of an intervention by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, aimed at supporting vulnerable households amid current economic challenges.

The intervention, carried out between March 17 and 19, targeted low-income families across communities including Sabon Garin Dole, Boyekai and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, where beneficiaries received food items such as rice, pasta and cooking oil.

According to his Special Assistant on Media, Abdullahi Mohammed, in a statement on Saturday, the Minister emphasised that the initiative was aimed at cushioning the effects of current economic challenges, particularly on women and disadvantaged groups, while enabling them to celebrate Sallah with dignity.

The Minister was quoted as noting that the programme aligns with the social welfare focus of the administration of Bola Tinubu, adding, “I commend Mr. President very highly for his unwavering commitment to the unity of this nation and for his determination to use infrastructure as a powerful tool to bring Nigerians together".

Goronyo emphasised that the outreach forms part of broader efforts to expand social support and improve living conditions, especially in underserved communities, while linking the initiative to ongoing infrastructure development, citing major road projects such as the Sokoto–Illela–Lagos corridor and the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano axis, which he said are intended to enhance connectivity and economic activity nationwide, the statement added.

The Minister added that the effort complements welfare programmes of the Sokoto State Government under Ahmed Aliyu, while acknowledging the influence of Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko on his approach to governance.

The distribution, Mohammed said in the statement, underscores the role of targeted social interventions in addressing immediate needs while broader economic and infrastructure measures take effect.

The beneficiaries and other stakeholders described the intervention as timely, noting its impact on easing the burden on vulnerable households.
