...backs legal scholarship

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, has called for sustained investment in military justice and legal scholarship, describing them as critical to strengthening discipline, accountability and national security.

Goronyo made the call on Saturday in Sokoto at the presentation of a book titled 'Military Law in Nigeria: A Quick Reference Guide to Practice and Procedure'.

Speaking as Special Guest of Honour, the Minister said Nigeria’s evolving security challenges require a well-defined and effectively implemented military legal framework to support the Armed Forces.

“As the country confronts complex threats, the role of military law in ensuring professionalism, discipline and accountability cannot be overstated,” he said.

He described the publication as timely, noting that it provides a practical guide for navigating military legal procedures and could improve institutional efficiency and adherence to the rule of law.

According to the Minister's Special Assistant on Media, Abdullahi Mohammed in a statement on Sunday, the event drew participants from the legal, academic and security sectors, including representatives of the governors of Kebbi and Zamfara States, senior judicial officers, political leaders and academics.

Goronyo, who was also honoured at the event, said the recognition would serve as motivation to deepen his contributions to public service, while stressing that strong institutions and a culture of research and legal discipline remain essential for sustainable development.

He urged members of the Armed Forces, legal practitioners, policymakers and scholars to utilise the book’s insights to strengthen the administration of military justice.

The Minister also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for policies aimed at strengthening security and the rule of law, adding that such efforts are necessary for national stability.

The Governor of Sokoto State Ahmed Aliyu, said the initiative would support both state and national development efforts.

Represented by his Deputy, Idris Muhammad Gobir, the governor said, "Minister Goronyo''s many initiatives, including this latest effort have proven to be impactful and relevant to both state and national progress

The chairman of the occasion, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, also underscored the importance of the book’s subject matter, describing it as highly relevant to legal practice in Nigeria, particularly in relation to governance, security, and institutional accountability.

Earlier, the author, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the book was designed as a practical reference for legal practitioners and military personnel, with a focus on improving understanding of military legal processes.

Other speakers at the event described the publication as a significant contribution to legal scholarship, with relevance to governance, security and institutional accountability.

Stakeholders at the event expressed confidence that the publication would enhance professional practice, strengthen legal education and contribute to the development of military law in Nigeria.
