Motorists travelling along the Benin–Lagos Highway were trapped in a heavy gridlock for several hours around the Ovia River Bridge on Tuesday.

Some of the stranded motorists said they had spent more than seven hours in the traffic.

Many drivers were forced to reverse and take alternative routes through the Iguobazuwa axis in a bid to escape the congestion.

It was gathered that several potholes on sections of the highway forced motorists to drive on one lane, resulting in vehicles taking turns and worsening the traffic situation.
