A social and religious organisation, Al-Hisbat Movement of Nigeria, Ikare-Akoko Zone, has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and inter religious harmony.
The group which distanced itself from the activities and identity of Hisbah groups operating in some northern states of the country, clarified that it is a registered social and religious group operating in Ikare-Akoko and Owo zones of Ondo State.
It noted that its activities are conducted within the extant provisions of the 1999 Constitution and in collaboration with local government authorities a well as security agencies.
The group, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, stated that it is not a law enforcement agency or vigilante outfit, noting that it does not engage in crime-fighting or enforcement of religious laws.
According to the group, its operations are strictly community-based and geared towards moral and spiritual development.
It added that it also supports community development initiatives and assists with traffic coordination during large public gatherings when necessary.
It explained that “Hisbah,” which operates in some northern states such as Kano and Sokoto, is a separate organisation with a distinct legal framework in states where Sharia law is implemented.
It maintained that there is no affiliation between the northern Hisbah bodies and the Al-Hisbat Movement in Ondo State.
Reiterating its dedication to peaceful coexistence, the group pledged respect for adherents of all faiths and continued cooperation with government authorities to sustain order and unity within the community.
Citing Qur’an 25:63, the organisation stated that it remains guided by the principle of responding to negativity with peace and urged members of the public to clearly understand the difference between Al-Hisbat and Hisbah to prevent misinformation and misunderstanding.
