In an era where stories shape culture, identity, and opportunity, Haitian-American author Prof. Betty Fortunat has emerged as a powerful voice dedicated to ensuring that stories of her community are not only told, but preserved, celebrated and transformed into platforms for empowerment.
The philanthropist has built a reputation as a visionary leader committed to elevating women, entrepreneurs, and emerging authors around the world. Through her writing, mentorship, and community initiatives, she has helped countless individuals recognize that their life experiences are not merely memories—they are assets capable of educating, inspiring, and transforming future generations.
Fortunat’s journey reflects resilience, determination, and purpose. Proud of her Haitian heritage and her American journey, she has dedicated her life to bridging cultures through education, storytelling, and leadership.
While education is one pillar of her work, writing has become the cornerstone of her mission. Fortunat is a prolific author whose books explore identity, entrepreneurship, culture, and empowerment. Her growing catalogue includes influential titles such as Before You Flip, This Friend Inside, The Color of Your Accent, Fortunately Femmes: A Legacy of Fortune and Fempreneurship, Ayiti Gen Pitit, Compas Direct: 70 Ans, Men O’ Pause: A Hot Mama’s Diary, and Fanm Pa Dra.

Through these works, Fortunat has positioned herself not just as a writer, but as a platform builder. She believes that stories are the most powerful form of currency and that storytelling can transform lives.
Fortunat serves as a Business Management professor at DeVry University, where she mentors aspiring professionals and future leaders, teaching them not only how to succeed in business, but how to build meaningful impact through strategic thinking and leadership.
Her philosophy is simple yet profound: pain can become purpose, silence can become strategy, and lived experiences can become education.
Through writing, she encourages individuals to see their stories differently—not as secrets to hide, but as opportunities to monetise, mobilise, and memorialise their legacy.
For her, writing is not simply creative expression. Writing is ministry, strategy and legacy work. Her inspiration for writing traces back to her childhood experiences observing the untold brilliance within her community. She grew up witnessing women carrying deep wisdom, entrepreneurs carrying powerful strategies, and families holding generations of lessons—yet many of those stories remained undocumented. That realization shaped her mission.
“Writing is preservation. Writing is ownership. Writing is power. When you write, you don’t just tell a story—you control the narrative. And for communities like ours, that matters,” she said.
Her work and dedication have not gone unnoticed as she has received numerous recognitions for her impact on literature and community empowerment. In 2025, she was honored twice with the prestigious Author of the Year Award, receiving the distinction from both Haiti Inbound and the Haitian Music Awards.
Being recognised as Author of the Year in 2025 twice reflects the growing influence of her work and the impact she continues to make within both the literary and cultural landscape.
In addition, she received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024, presented under the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden, recognizing her years of dedication to service and community development.
Her humanitarian efforts continue to expand, as she is also scheduled to receive the Humanitarian Award on May 30 in Atlanta, Georgia, honoring her ongoing commitment to uplifting communities.
Beyond her work as an author and professor, Betty is the founder of Fortunately Femmes Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women through entrepreneurship, authorship, and financial education. Through this platform, she has helped women discover their voice, launch businesses, publish books, and build sustainable futures for themselves and their families.
Yet despite her professional achievements, Betty remains deeply grounded in family and purpose. She is a devoted wife and proud mother of two remarkable children. She often credits her father as the driving force behind her journey to the United States and the inspiration behind her determination to create opportunities for others.
Today, Betty Fortunat continues to expand her mission—building platforms, mentoring authors, empowering women, and ensuring that the stories of her community are preserved for generations to come. In Betty’s world, storytelling is more than literature. It is leadership. It is empowerment. And it is legacy.
