The ninth day of February 2024 marked a somber day in Nigeria, as the nation grappled with the tragic news emanating from America. Waters rose in disbelief as reports confirmed the untimely passing of Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, a miracle-working banker and investor, alongside his wife, son, and a close friend. They lost their lives in a helicopter accident exacerbated by poor weather conditions over California. The news hit the country like a thunderclap, and disbelief swiftly turned to sorrow as friends and associates struggled to accept that their beloved colleague and friend would no longer walk among them.

As the news spread, it felt as though the very skies wept; the sound of birds calmingly mourned in their natural harmonies as tears flowed like rivers from countless hearts. For many, this was not just a farewell, but a profound loss that resonated deeply within their lives—a reminder that life can turn unexpectedly and without warning.

Thankfully, as of today, they have worked through their differences and found common ground, presenting a united front in honor of Herbert’s legacy. Though they have quietly moved forward, the weight of their sorrow remains, as many carry the memory of him in their hearts.

On the second anniversary of his passing, family, friends, and associates gathered in Lagos to commemorate Herbert’s life and achievements. The event served both as a tribute and a moment of reflection, reminding everyone of the indelible mark he left on the banking industry and beyond. Advertorials filled the pages of major newspapers, with heartfelt messages and condolences pouring in from various individuals and organizations, all celebrating his greatness and the impact he had on the lives of others.

Additionally, his family at Access Bank organized a posthumous service, honoring his remarkable contributions and the legacy he built during his lifetime. It was a poignant reminder that, although he may be gone, Herbert Wigwe’s spirit and influence continue to resonate deeply within the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
