Former Nigeria international Odion Ighalo has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to grant Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle a contract extension following the team’s bronze-medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Chelle, whose current $50,000-a-month deal has 10 months remaining, is reportedly seeking a salary increase to $130,000. Under his leadership, Nigeria reached the semi-finals before a controversial 2-1 loss to the hosts, eventually securing third place by defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties.

Speaking on Brila FM, the former Manchester United striker emphasized that Chelle has brought much-needed stability to the national team setup.

"The Super Eagles performed well under Chelle at the last AFCON," Ighalo stated. "He should be compensated with an extension and given what he has requested."

Ighalo warned that frequent coaching changes have historically undermined the team's progress. He urged the NFF to secure the technical department’s future to ensure qualification for the next FIFA World Cup, noting the "shame" of Nigeria missing both the 2022 and 2026 editions.

"The NFF should ensure performance bonuses are tied to his new contract," Ighalo added. "By doing so, they keep both the coach and players motivated toward World Cup qualification."
