Telecom infrastructure company, IHS Nigeria has stated its commitment to growing the creative sector of the economy through the use of technology tools.

Its Senior Vice President and Chief Corporate Services Officer, Dapo Otunla, who spoke in Lagos during the unveiling of the digitalized National Museum in Lagos, said the company decided to partner with the Federal Government on the project as part of its many sustainability projects in over 160 communities across the country.

“The renovation and the digitisation of over 200 national artifacts, speak to some of our sustainability pillars. If you look at the artifacts in the gallery, they’re reflective of our history, they’re reflective of our culture, and more importantly, they highlight the impact of sustainability, being able to preserve value and maintain objects that our forefathers created in their time and left for generations that came after them to enjoy,” Otunla said.

Describing how technology is driving the initiative, Otunla said: “We started off by digitising over 200 artifacts, and the intention is to continue to grow that number. Technology itself is the driver, which speaks about IHS’ core values, and innovation is one of them. So there was a lot of work put into the digitising of the artifacts, which opens vista of opportunities to grow the country’s creative economy, through revenue generation and the building of the mindset of the younger generation.”

Director-General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments Nigeria (NCMM), Olugbile Holloway, who commended IHS Nigeria for the initiative and commitment to investment, said in the last two decades the National Museum in Lagos has not undergone any extensive renovation like what IHS did.

“The renovation has repositioned the museum in such a way that the value proposition is now more solid and appealing to learn about culture and heritage of Nigeria. The national museum is a symbol of unity, where the culture of all major tribes in Nigeria is represented. I salute the courage of IHS to key into the vision of NCMM and we are happy they were able to support us in the first phase,” Holloway said.

He urged other private sector players to also support the vision of NCMM in order to preserve Nigeria’s culture and to boost her creative economy.

Also speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, commended IHS for the partnership, and expressed satisfaction with the entire renovation and digitisation work. According to her, the initiative is a facelift that will help preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage, while boosting the creative economy.
