Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric (IE), yesterday explained reasons for the reduction in electricity supply to customers on its network.

In a notice signed by its management yesterday, the utility blamed the situation on the limited gas supply to thermal power plants, noting that the situation is not peculiar to her Discos alone.

“The ongoing reduction in electricity supply is largely due to a nationwide drop in power generation, caused by limited gas supply to thermal power plants.

“This has significantly reduced the energy available on the national grid and, consequently, the allocation to Ikeja Electric and other distribution companies. As a result, the volume of electricity available for distribution has been impacted,” the company explained.

It expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their patience and understanding during this period.

The situation left many parts of Lagos and its environs in darkness, a situation more pronounced during the Eid-el-Fitri celebration and throughout the weekend because of lack of electricity supply.

Recall that The Nation reported yesterday that 10 DisCos, including  Eko Distribution Company (EKEDC) and Ikeja Electric (IE), which supply electricity to the nation’s commercial nerve centre, received zero allocation of electricity as of 19:22 hours yesterday. Only the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) received 509 megawatts (MW) from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).
