Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri has established a Department of Criminology and Security Studies to equip students with skills to address the nation’s pressing security concerns.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Uchefula  Chukwumaeze (SAN), highlighted the department’s potential.

“You’re in a versatile field, mostly sought after. Your profession is key to maintaining law and order. Help the department guard the university, reduce miscreants, and guide peers against cultism,” he said.

He added that the department’s popularity was evident, with over 200 students enrolled in the first year, and predicted higher figures in future admissions.

The Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Martin Onu, thanked guests for their presence.

The Head of Department, Prof. Dan Nkwocha, emphasised the department’s focus on practical training.

“Today reflects our university’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and societal relevance in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. We’re preaching the gospel of criminal law according to Nigeria’s Constitution,” he said.

He appealed to security agencies to welcome students for internships and practical exposure, pledging that the department will graduate students who’ll collaborate with security agencies to prevent crime.

Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, pledged police support, offering access to forensic facilities and training opportunities.

“The police have a functional Forensic Unit. with an operational laboratory for analyzing documents and forensic data,” he said, inviting students to utilize the resources.
