For many Nigerians, insurance still feels like a promise that may not be kept. But for Abdelhamid Abdelrahman, the experience has been the opposite.

The RAP Building Solutions Ltd executive, and a long-time customer of Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, says his journey with the insurer changed his perception of how insurance should work—especially when it comes to claims.

“I actually had my doubts at some point,” he admitted. “I thought because they are one of the oldest insurance companies, maybe their service wouldn’t be as efficient.”

That assumption was tested in 2023 when he filed a vehicle insurance claim.

“It was processed in no time,” he said. “That was the moment everything changed for me.”

Since then, Abdelrahman says he has handled multiple claims on other vehicles within his fleet, all with the same level of speed and responsiveness.

He said his relationship with the company started about four years ago, influenced by its strong reputation and physical presence around his business environment in Lagos.

“Having an office close by made it easier to walk in, ask questions, and actually engage with them. That kind of access builds trust,” he explained.

Today, he says choosing insurance is no longer a question for him, it’s a standard part of how he manages risk.

“Whenever I have a vehicle, I will always subscribe to their packages. Mutual Benefits may be one of the oldest, but they are still one of the most responsive companies I’ve dealt with.”

Beyond his personal experience, Abdelrahman has a message for Nigerians who remain doubtful about insurance.

“People say insurance doesn’t work in Nigeria but it does,” he said. “The moment you make a claim and it’s handled smoothly, you understand the value immediately.”

In an industry often challenged by trust issues, real customer experiences carry weight. Analysts say prompt claims settlement remains the strongest proof point for any insurer.

When claims are paid quickly, customers are more likely to renew policies, trust in the system improves and more people are encouraged to adopt insurance.

For Abdelrahman, the conclusion is simple, “Insurance is not something you appreciate until you need it. But when it works, it works.”
