Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has congratulated President Bola Tinubu following Nigeria’s successful election to the International Law Commission.
The election, held during the 77th session of the Commission in Geneva, Switzerland, saw Nigerian jurist Olufemi Elias appointed to fill a vacant seat created by the resignation of Phoebe Okowa.
Elias' tenure will run until December 31, 2027.
Reacting to the development, Ibrahim described the appointment as a major diplomatic achievement and a sign of Nigeria’s renewed relevance in global affairs.
According to him, the development indicates that Nigeria is now “fully back” at the United Nations.
He added that the Tinubu administration should expect more international successes in the coming months, describing the election as one of several early gains.
The International Law Commission, established by the UN General Assembly in 1947, is tasked with the progressive development and codification of international law, including frameworks on state responsibility and immunity.
In a letter dated May 5, 2026, the Chairman of the Commission, Andreas Mavroyiannis, confirmed Elias’ election and congratulated him on behalf of the Commission, expressing readiness to receive him upon the commencement of his duties.
The Nigerian Mission to the United Nations also communicated the development to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
