No fewer than 12 persons have been confirmed dead, while 14 others sustained injuries in a road accident at Egono village along the Benin–Auchi–Lokoja highway.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were travelling in a truck conveying both passengers and goods when the vehicle veered off the road.
The truck reportedly overturned and trapped several occupants after the driver attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre.
Spokesperson for the Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Patricia Onwochei, confirmed that the accident occurred on Wednesday, with 12 fatalities recorded.
She attributed the crash to wrongful overtaking.
Onwochei added that one of the deceased had been buried, while the remains of the other 11 victims were deposited at the mortuary of St Lazarus Hospital.
