The Federal Government has fulfilled its pledge to reward members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, where they successfully defended their continental title.

The rewards, which include documents for houses and national honours, were formally presented to the players in Lyon, France, by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, alongside the commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade.

The presentation fulfils a commitment made by the Federal Government to recognise the team’s outstanding performance after they emerged champions of the 2025 AfroBasket tournament organised by the International Basketball Federation.

D’Tigress have dominated African women’s basketball in recent years, consolidating their reputation as the continent’s most successful team. Their victory at the 2025 tournament further extended Nigeria’s impressive run in the competition, reinforcing the country’s status as a powerhouse in women’s basketball.

Officials of the National Sports Commission said the gesture reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising athletes who bring honour to the nation through exceptional performances on the international stage.

The ceremony in France was attended by members of the Nigerian delegation as well as players and officials of the team, who received the documents on behalf of the squad.

D’Tigress, under the supervision of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, have consistently delivered strong performances in continental and global competitions, including appearances at the Olympic Games and the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Their continued dominance in Africa has also strengthened Nigeria’s reputation as a leading force in women’s basketball, with the team widely celebrated for inspiring a new generation of female athletes across the country.

Further details regarding the individual beneficiaries and the specific national honours conferred are expected to be released by the National Sports Commission.
