A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Hon. Mascot Uzor Kalu, has paid a consultative visit to the APC State Working Committee and members of the party’s Executive Committee (EXCO) to formally notify them of his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election under the party’s banner.

In his remarks, the Abia State APC Chairman, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, assured all aspirants of a level playing field, emphasizing that under his leadership, the party would guarantee a free, fair, and transparent process for all contenders. He reiterated the party’s commitment to internal democracy and inclusiveness.

Addressing party faithful during the meeting, Hon. Mascot Kalu expressed deep concern over what he described as a glaring lack of transparency and accountability in the current administration of the state.

Mascot, the younger brother of Senator Orji Kalu, particularly criticised the state's 2026 budget, noting that over N1 trillion was appropriated without adequate consideration for critical sectors affecting women and youths.

He further decried what he termed “inflated project costs,” citing road construction as a key example. According to him, while the Rivers State Government in 2023 awarded a 16-kilometer road project with two bridges for N19 billion, the Abia State Government, barely two months later, awarded the reconstruction of the 5.8-kilometer Port Harcourt Road to the same contractor, Julius Berger, for N36 billion.

Hon. Kalu lamented that despite huge monthly allocations of over N50 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), the impact of such funds is not sufficiently visible in the state.

He accused the current administration of neglecting the welfare of the people while prioritizing projects that do not directly improve the lives of ordinary Abians.
